    Definitions and Concepts:
    What IS eLearning?

Hopefully you’re feeling reasonably comfortable with the course (and with each other smile). Now let’s start looking at the crux of why we’re here – What is eLearning?

Follow the links and instructions below to participate in this section’s activities.

    • Primary Objective:

      • To discover and discuss the various types and elements of eLearning
    • Key Content:

    • A) Ministry of Education

Check out these resources specific to the New Zealand context.

    • Watch this introduction to eLearning for NZ educators, from elearning.tki.org.nz

    • Click to view a literature review on eLearning done by the NZ Ministry of Education (10 minutes).

Scroll down to the eLearning heading and read the definitions provided. You'll tell us which definitions you noticed in the Key Task below.

      • Take note of the different meanings they have found - what are the big differences?
      • Which definitions/concepts stand out to you? Why?
    • B) 10 Reasons article

Click the link below to read an article outlining 10 reasons why the author thinks online learning is as good as or surpasses Face-to-Face (F2F) learning (under 20 mins).
Be prepared to respond to this article in the Key Task below.

    • Read this article and be prepared to comment on how much you agree with the things Mark Kassop says.

    • Key Tasks:

NOTE: If you notice the key tasks are 'greyed out' and not selectable, it's because you haven't completed all the previous key tasks. Right throughout the module, you need to complete all the previous key tasks in order to continue on with the next ones. Please see the small print below each task to see which previous key tasks you need to complete to open these.

The Cool Tools and Secondary Objectives can be completed in any order.

    • 1) Definitions Discussion

Post to the Discussion Forum below to discuss your views on the Ministry of Education's eLearning Terms article (approx. 30 mins)

    • 2) 10 Reasons activity

After reading the "10 Reasons" Article by Mark Kassop, click the link below to participate in the interactive activity about it (approx. 20 mins).

    • Remember, everything below here is optional, but you need to complete at least three of these activities across the module to pass Assessment 1.

      Cool Tool:

    • Ever wanted a quick and easy way to brainstorm with others online? Do you wish there were sticky notes in cyberspace? Well look no further.

Padlet is a cool little tool that lets you stick ideas, words, images, links and other stuff to a 'wall' on the internet. And it looks nice too!

Once you've signed up (for free) you can save different walls for different purposes and share them with your students by emailing or putting the link on Moodle.

You'll see I have used a couple of these walls for this module as places where you the participants can post your ideas etc. in a more aesthetically pleasing way than cold-hard discussion forums.

The cool thing is that participants/students don't need a login/password to contribute. Although you can make them get and use one if you wish.

Check out the link above (www.padlet.com), and make your first wall even before you sign up. It's quite a universal tool with lots of possibilities for teaching and learning in the online environment.

    • Secondary Objectives:

How are you feeling so far? Hopefully not too daunted.

Click the tick box when you're ready to see the secondary objectives (including one activity that counts towards Assessment 1) -->
