    Introduction

    The aim of this lesson is to look at the properties of materials in general terms, so we are then able to classify and evaluate specific material choices in building designs.

      These are the activities we'd like you to complete this week.

      1. Watch the tutor tutorial and take notes
      2. Browse the Pinterest boards provided to see how you can gather resources during your study into categories. Sign up and create a board for construction materials and start pinning. Share your board in this week's forum.
      3. Complete the research task and share in this week's forum.
      4. Find alternative materials for G Block and share your solution for each on our padlet wall.


      Activity 1: Tutor introduction to the topic

      This video will talk you through the purpose of and give you some background on how to complete the activities.

    • Activity 2: Curate a Pinterest board for construction materials


      In the link below you will see boards I have been adding to over the past few years relating to renovations I have done.

      1. Start collecting samples of materials and projects that you like the look of. As you progress through each of the materials in this module save samples on your board. To do this you'll need to create a free Pinterest account.
      2. Share your board and ideas in the forum.

    • Activity 3: Material research task


      Research task: Complete the form

      1. Choose 5 random materials to research from the list.
      2. Share your file this week's forum by attaching it to a reply post.

      Let's see if we can compile a completed list as a group.

    • Activity 4: Suggest an alternative material/product


      The following photographs are from G Block. They are issues that we have noticed since being in the building.

      Having briefly looked at the properties of materials see if you can find an alternative product that currently exists in the marketplace that could replace what currently exists?

      Add your suggestions to the Padlet with a link to the website or an image and a description of why you think it might be suitable. Be prepared to discuss.

    • Activity 5: Browse the Internet resources provided.


      • Record 5 interesting facts from your research this week to share in the forum or ask a question. (30mins)
