Fixing and fasteners hold the structure together. This video is long at over 17 minutes. You do not need to watch it all, but rather as you need it.

   This is an overview of a house structure and where/how a range of fixes and fastenings are used within it; from blue screws at the top of the frame to the pile connectors, and heavy duty fixings.

   This section goes into detail on particular bracings, joist hangers, tylok plates, wire dogs, pile fixings, truss to plate fixings, ceiling ties, nailon plates, cleats, screws, etc. in a product range. These are commonly used in the New Zealand building industry.

Fixings, fastenings and the building code

Find and watch the video overview on relevance of NZ building regulations: NZ Building regulations

Video highlight the three relevant clauses of the code:

• B1: structural adequacy
• B2: durability of componentry; includes materials used in fixings and intended life of the building
• E2: external moisture; includes flashing requirements for window, doors, etc. and risk matrix for wall clading

Video also explains how to achieve compliance with the code and regulations:

• Acceptable solution – NZS3604 (residential timber structures)
• Verification method (for anything not covered by the acceptable solution) - NZS3603 (timber) and AS/NZS1170 (specific loads and applications)
• Alternative solution – compliant alternatives to NZS3604

What is an alternative solution?

The video uses the example of fixing a top plate to a stud. Under NZS3604 the acceptable solution is to use wire dogs in a particular way. However, with relevant research and testing an alternative solution is to use a LUMBERLOK stud strand. This fixing is still compliant though different to the acceptable solution.
