Under New Zealand law, working with asbestos is prohibited except for certain situations as defined by the Asbestos Regulations. Asbestos-contaminated dust or debris is especially hazardous.

Demolition and refurbishment
Before you demolish or refurbish any property, building or structure constructed or installed before January 2000, you must, under Asbestos Regulations, identify asbestos or asbestos-containing material. This also applies if asbestos has been identified or is likely to be present.
