Review 3.2 - Further Thinking
Referring to your brainstorm, complete the following tasks in your blog.
These tasks are a mixture of reflective journalling and applying the concepts you have learned to your own thoughts and practices.
- Make a short list of what you believe are the main ideas espoused by Invitational Education theory.
- Look at this list and try to think of an example of where you can each of these ideas operating in your own teaching practice.
- What are the four levels of functioning? Write down each level with a brief summary of its main characteristics. Think of one example for each level that is evident within your own personal and/or professional life.
- What are the 5Ps and how do they relate to ‘inviting’ and ‘disinviting’ educational practices? Brainstorm a list of disinviting practices. Choose three or four ideas from this list and try to imagine a solution for each of these practices.
- Think about assessment. Think about your own experiences, both positive and negative. Think about how your students respond to their assessments. Start a conversation with some of your students. Ask them how they feel about the assignments and tests and what things make it easier or more difficult to complete the assessments. What are some of the ‘disinviting’ aspects or practices around assessment? Are there any actions that could be taken which would help make the assessments more ‘inviting’ while still maintaining the purpose of the assessment?
- What is your opinion of the theory of Invitational Education? Are there aspects of the theory that you remain sceptical about, or that you disagree with? Why?
- If you could have a frank and open conversation with W.W. Purkey, what would you want to say to him?
- Have the ideas in this course given you any insights into your professional practices, your relationships with students and colleagues and your role as a tutor?
- Do you think any of these insights have affected how you behave or interact with those around you?
