Reflective Journal Hints

What are 'eLearning Concepts'?

Each journal entry needs to be based on one so that your reflection stays pertinent to the intended learning for the assignment.

The concepts I am looking for are any topic to do with eLearning that we may or may not have discussed in the module. Examples could include any of the topic sections in Moodle (as general concepts), any of the concepts that are touched upon in the readings and activities, any of the topics you may have discussed in the forums, or something you have noticed elsewhere that is relevant to eLearning.

Remember: "What is it about your experience that you want to mention? What's the SPECIFIC TRIGGER that got you thinking about what ONE CONCEPT?"

A (quickly written) example:

...Remember to follow the format prescribed in the marking criteria...
  • This example may not be perfect, but if you were to write along these lines remembering to describe your thoughts and learning, and make clear links to the eLearning concept, you're sure for a good grade. big grin
  • The [red italics] point out links to the marking criteria.

Concept and context:
While I was riding home on the bus the other night I noticed how so many people were glued to their mobile device screens. [Description of the trigger] This made me think about flexibility of access - how we can access information and learning activities, where ever we are in a variety of modes. [Introduction of the concept] Flexibility of access is one of the biggest points of difference that eLearning has over traditional methods, which is why this concept is so relevant to eLearning. [How the concept relates to eLearning]

Learner experience:
As a student I hadn't even thought of using my phone to check Moodle on the bus or during my down time. I’ve always waited until I get home into a fixed place and space to do my ‘homework’. By relegating my learning to fixed places and spaces, I feel I may be limiting the possibilities that engaging at various times throughout the day could bring. Maybe if I could access Moodle on my phone while riding the bus home I could make a quick post here and read something there. This could totally help me to feel more relaxed about things... I might even feel happy to audio record a journal entry – get it done nice and easy instead of fluffing around with spelling etc. [Impacts of the concept on me as an online learner]

Teaching application:

As a teacher I can now see that the mobile medium is quite an untapped space. What would it take for my students to WANT to access information and activities in their down time instead of playing games? In my current practice, since all the tasks I set are directly related to assessment, students don't have much choice. I wonder if they feel like I did with eLearning - that it is something that you need to set aside specific time to do in a specific place… [Influences on my teaching]

I hope that helps.
